Exceptional oriental cabinet, a work that establishes a fruitful aesthetic dialogue between the Far East and Rococo Europe.
The main body of the cabinet is a testimony to the virtuosity of the oriental master cabinetmakers and lacquerers. Against the dark background of the lacquered wood, a delicate visual narrative unfolds. The scene depicts a dreamlike lakescape, populated by figures with mother-of-pearl faces that seem suspended in time. A pagoda rises with architectural elegance, while a boat rides the calm waters, evoking the poetry and serenity of Asian art. Inlay and marquetry combine tones and materials to highlight the riders and the architecture against the wooded background.
The structure is articulated by two leaves, with an imposing central lock and a set of finely engraved openwork brass hinges. These metallic elements, in addition to their practical function, enhance the sumptuousness of the whole.
When its doors are opened, the cabinet reveals ten drawers of different sizes, each adorned with subtle mother-of-pearl branches. Each drawer is filleted in metal, contributing to a harmonious order. The delicacy of detail and the mastery of craftsmanship on the exterior is also reflected on the interior.
The carved, fretworked and gilded wood base, on the other hand, embodies the European Rococo spirit. Its sinuous and organic forms are intertwined in an exuberant composition of foliage and rockery. Among the profusion of foliate motifs, the two putti that adorn the overhang of the skirt stand out.
This cabinet is an enduring symbol of refined craftsmanship and the erudition of an era that knew how to find harmony in the fusion of distant worlds.
