BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Japanese box. Meiji Era (1808-1912).
Lacquered wood, gilded and inlaid mother-of-pearl, with representation of phoenix.
Measurements: 12 x 39,5 x 30,5 cm.

Refined Japanese box made of lacquered wood, a characteristic example of the high quality craftsmanship of the Meiji period. In this period, Japanese decorative arts achieved international recognition for their technical virtuosity and exquisite beauty.

The box has a rectangular shape with gently rounded corners and edges. The lid is magnificently decorated with the figure of a phoenix (known in Japan as H?-?). This mythological being, symbol of the imperial household, virtue, grace and good omens, is depicted in full flight, with its long, graceful tail feathers spread out over the surface. The composition is dynamic and detailed, showing the bird's head with a red crest and its body and wings in shades of gold and other subtle colors.

The decoration is made by sprinkling gold dust over the wet lacquer, which allowed for intricate and luminous designs. It also includes fine mother-of-pearl inlays (raden), which add iridescent touches and a luxurious contrast to the black background and the luster of the gold.
