DESCRIPTION
Khmer style crowned Buddha. Cambodia, Angkor Period, 12th-13th centuries.
Bronze.
Measurements: 50,5 x 17 x 11 cm.
Rare bronze figure of a crowned Buddha (or possibly Avalokiteshvara), seated in dhy?na-mudr? on a double lotus pedestal. The figure wears an elaborate five-pointed crown with flame-shaped finials and a tall central ushnisha, flanked by openwork elements reminiscent of flaming mandorlas. The right hand touches the earth in bh?mispar?a-mudr? ("calling the earth as witness"), while the left rests in meditation on the lap.
The body is adorned with a beaded necklace and bracelets, and the robes feature fine engravings. The figure shows a strong green and blue patina, consistent with a long burial, and remnants of the casting core visible inside the hollow base. The separate halo and elaborate crown are typical of Khmer bronzes from the Angkor Thom workshops.
The tall flaming halo and five-pointed crown are key features of the Khmer style, especially the Bayon style (late 12th - early 13th century). The elongated body, serene face and jewels suggest Avalokiteshvara rather than a plain Buddha, although Khmer bronzes often blur that distinction. Remnants of the casting core at the base confirm the authentic lost wax technique.
