DESCRIPTION
Mask of Quanyin. Edo era Japan, XVIII century.
In lacquered wood.
Measurements: 30 cm (mask height); 42 x 16 cm (pedestal).
This mask represents Quanyin, bodhisattva of compassion, one of the most beloved figures of Buddhism in East Asia. Made of lacquered wood during the Edo era, the work stands out for its extraordinary spiritual presence and for the idealized serenity of its features, designed to convey calm and benevolence.
A timeless quality emanates from the face. The softly modeled features are reminiscent of devotional models intended to inspire recollection. The stylized floral crown reinforces its sacred character and its identification as a celestial figure.
A piece of great symbolic force, probably linked to a ritual context or to a space of private veneration, this representation synthesizes the refined aesthetic sensibility of 18th century Japan.
