DESCRIPTION
Mamluk mosque lamp: Syria, Egypt, XVI century.
Blown glass, gilded and polychrome.
It shows wear.
Measurements: 38 x 21 cm.
Made of blown glass, decorated by enameling and gilding techniques, the piece combines function and beauty in the same object, designed to illuminate sacred spaces such as mosques or madrasas, its design is characterized by a richly ornamented surface, where floral motifs of great delicacy with inscriptions in Arabic calligraphy are intertwined. These inscriptions often include honorific references to Mamluk sultans, thus integrating the political power and the spiritual dimension in the same visual program. The calligraphy, far from being a merely decorative element, acts as a vehicle of religious meaning and prestige.
The structure of the lamp, designed to be suspended from the ceiling by means of handles, housed a small lamp that projected light through the colored glass. This luminous effect transformed the architectural space, creating an atmosphere of seclusion and sacredness.
Within the tradition of Mamluk art, this typology reaches a high degree of technical and aesthetic sophistication, reflecting the splendor of the glass workshops of the time. The combination of fragile materials, meticulous decoration and ritual function makes these lamps authentic masterpieces of Islamic decorative art, where light acquires a symbolic value associated with the divine.
