This circular tile finial, known in China as wadang, comes from Jiangsu Province, south of the Yangtze River, and can be dated around 1930, in the middle of the Chinese Republican period. Made of patinated terracotta with a matte gray finish, the fragment preserves the aesthetics inherited from the architecture of the Ming and Qing dynasties, whose monumental and residential roofs used these types of pieces for both functional and symbolic purposes. Placed at the visible end of the rows of tiles, the wadang protected the roof structure from moisture and wear, while acting as an ornamental support and vehicle for auspicious meanings.

The relief decoration shows a succession of circular medallions inscribed with geometric motifs associated with happiness and good fortune, a frequent iconography in traditional Chinese architecture. These symbols were not merely decorative: they were part of a visual language intended to bring harmony, prosperity and protection to the inhabitants of the building. The rhythmic repetition of the motifs, together with the undulating profile of the upper rim, gives the piece a marked sculptural quality that reveals the refined craftsmanship characteristic of the building tradition of southern China.

Although conceived as a utilitarian architectural element, this finial has a remarkable historical and aesthetic value. The piece is an eloquent example of the continuity of imperial decorative models in Republican China, at a time of political transition and accelerated modernization.
