DESCRIPTION
Chinese tea box. XIX Century.
In wood with mother-of-pearl inlay.
Measurements: 20 x 38 x 12 cm.
Chinese tea box made of wood and decorated with inlaid mother-of-pearl applications, dating from the nineteenth century and linked to oriental productions destined for both the domestic market and Western export. The piece presents a refined ornamentation of floral and landscape inspiration, with small architectural scenes and plant motifs executed by means of delicate iridescent inlays on a lacquered or dyed background in dark tones.
Its aesthetic is related to the oriental tradition of mother-of-pearl inlay known in Korea as Najeonchilgi, a technique of great prestige developed since medieval times, although this piece seems to respond to a nineteenth-century Chinese interpretation influenced by that decorative language. The use of engraved and polished mother-of-pearl panels, combined with symmetrical compositions and natural motifs, reflects the oriental taste for harmony, idealized landscape and meticulous ornamentation.
The compartmentalized structure of the interior, characteristic of 19th century tea boxes, was intended to preserve different varieties of tea, a product of enormous economic and cultural importance on the trade routes between Asia and Europe. During this period, Chinese manufactures of lacquered and mother-of-pearl inlaid objects were in great demand in the West, especially among bourgeois elites fascinated by oriental exoticism and Asian decorative arts.
The landscapes with architectures, trees and naturalistic scenes embedded in the side panels evoke the traditional Chinese imagery associated with contemplation and the balance between nature and architecture. The combination of fine woods, geometric decoration and carved mother-of-pearl gives the piece a remarkable visual richness and a marked handcrafted character.
Beyond its utilitarian function, this box is an elegant example of 19th century oriental decorative arts and of the intense commercial and aesthetic exchange between Asia and Europe during the era of international trade in tea and luxury objects.
