Important Chinese funerary model of the Han dynasty, made of glazed ceramic, representing a watchtower of several levels. The piece reproduces with remarkable architectural sense an elevated construction, articulated by means of superimposed bodies, openwork balconies, protruding roofs and open spans, elements that evoke the defensive and residential structures of ancient China.

This type of ceramic models, known as mingqi, were part of the funerary trousseau and were intended to accompany the deceased in the afterlife. Far from being simple miniatures, these architectures reproduced goods, spaces and status symbols, guaranteeing continuity, protection and prestige in the afterlife.

The tower retains traces of green glaze, characteristic of many Han productions, along with earthy deposits and surface wear that reinforce its archaeological character. The richness of the details -celosities, balustrades, stepped roofs and small figures at the base- gives the piece a particularly attractive presence and allows us to appreciate the high degree of sophistication achieved by Chinese funerary ceramics.

Due to its scale, compositional complexity and decorative strength, this model is an outstanding testimony of the Han funerary imaginary, where architecture, power and beliefs about the afterlife are integrated in an object of great historical and visual value.
