DESCRIPTION
Cañamazo style rug; XX century.
Wool and jute.
Measurements: 135 x 250 cm.
Green field carpet decorated with a grid of stylized geometric and vegetal motifs that are arranged by almost the entire carpet, except for the border.
It is called canvas to a kind of fabric or light fabric of hemp, linen or cotton whose threads intertwined in square receive and direct the stitch of the tapestry embroidery. To obtain the best possible hemp canvas, white double cotton threads of three, four or five strands are generally used. When the hemp grid is irregular, this always happens when the warp passes are badly beaten, the threads that constitute it are not parallel or uniform; in this case the contours of the drawing executed according to the model are altered and, many times, the hemp itself is not sufficiently filled by the tapestry stitches. It is then said that the tapestry is badly chopped, meaning that the stitches are not uniform and regular.
