This tapestry, woven in Audenarde around 1580, is an example of the technical mastery and refined visual language of the Flemish school of tapestry during the 16th century. Audenarde, along with Brussels and Tournai, was one of the main centers of tapestry production in Flanders, a region that, thanks to its flourishing textile trade and the protection of aristocratic patrons, established itself as an internationally renowned artistic epicenter. The tapestry presents a court scene in a bucolic setting that articulates a visual narrative charged with amorous symbolism, gallantry and theatricality.
In the foreground, the composition focuses on an elegantly dressed couple, the knight in armor decorated with golden floral motifs and the lady in a voluminous dress of green and ocher tones, in a moment of intimate dialogue, possibly amorous, under the shade of a leafy tree. The attitude of the gentleman, who extends his arm pointing towards a group in the background, and the gestural response of the lady, generate a narrative tension that invites the viewer to interpret the implicit story. In the background, several other characters interact in small groups, evoking a theatrical scene that could be related to courtly love or a literary scene, perhaps inspired by the pastoral literature so in vogue at the time. The landscape is meticulously worked: trees with detailed foliage, winding paths, rural architecture and mountains on the horizon create an illusion of depth and place the scene in an idyllic natural setting.
