Marble.

This marble sculpture represents Jupiter, the main divinity of the Roman pantheon, equivalent to the Greek Zeus, associated to the supreme power, the sky and the cosmic order. His image was widely diffused in the Roman world, both in public and private contexts, reflecting his central role in the official religion.

The figure is depicted standing, with a solemn and majestic attitude, carrying his characteristic attributes, among which stands out the scepter, symbol of authority. At his side the presence of the eagle can be sensed, an animal consecrated to the god and emblem of his power. The treatment of the clothing, with marked and schematic folds, responds to a sculptural tradition that combines Hellenistic legacies with solutions typical of Roman art.

This type of pieces, of small format, used to have a devotional or decorative character, destined to domestic environments or cult spaces.

As a whole, the work constitutes a representative testimony of Roman sculpture of the Imperial period, as well as of the diffusion of the image of Jupiter as a symbol of power and protection within Roman culture.
