DESCRIPTION
Lucerne. Rome, 1st - 3rd century AD.
Terracotta.
Provenance: Private collection, Paris, France.
Condition: complete piece, with partial loss of engobe and deposits typical of its age.
Measurements: 9,7 cm long.
Roman terracotta lucerna of sober design, with circular deposit, frontal spout and elevated rear handle. The central disk, smooth and framed by concentric moldings, responds to a refined aesthetic in which the form and functionality acquire all the protagonism.
These lamps were part of everyday life in the Roman world, illuminating domestic, funerary and ritual spaces. Their interest lies precisely in that proximity to daily use, as a material testimony of the habits, needs and objects that accompanied private life in antiquity.
