Mask. Hellenism, 3rd century BC.
Terracotta.
Provenance: Private collection, Paris, France.
In good state of preservation.
Measurements: 10 cm high.
Hellenistic terracotta mask linked to the Greek theatrical repertoire. The piece presents an open and emphatic expression, with pierced eyes, marked eyebrows, short nose and wide open mouth, features designed to enhance the expressiveness of the character.
This type of mask was part of the visual culture of Hellenism, a period in which theatrical motifs became widespread in small terracotta objects. Beyond their relation to the stage, these pieces could fulfill a decorative, votive or symbolic function, evoking the world of theater and the Hellenistic taste for intense characterization.
The work stands out for the immediate strength of its gesture and for the direct modeling of the features, which retain a remarkable liveliness despite the superficial wear typical of its age.
