DESCRIPTION

Bird; Greece, Archaic period, 5th century BC.
Terracotta.
In good condition with slight wear and mineral deposits on the surface.
Measurements: 5 x 8,5 x 3 cm.
Small Greek terracotta figure representing a schematic bird, probably a dove, in vertical attitude. The piece shows a stylized treatment of the form, with folded wings, a short beak and a long tail that reinforces its elongated and balanced silhouette. Despite its formal simplicity, it retains part of its original polychrome, visible in traces of white pigment that allow us to intuit its primitive chromatic finish.
This figurine is part of the ceramic production of the Greek world during the Archaic period (ca. 6th-5th century BC), a period in which terracotta sculpture played a fundamental role in both domestic and ritual contexts. In this period, small-format votive figures were frequently deposited in sanctuaries as offerings to divinities, especially in cults related to nature, fertility or protection.
The archaic style is characterized by a tendency towards geometric simplification of forms and by a growing interest in symbolic rather than naturalistic representation. In this context, the bird could be associated with the divine, purity or the connection between the earthly and spiritual worlds, which reinforces its possible votive function.
