DESCRIPTION
Oil lamp. Rome, 1st–3rd centuries AD.
Terracotta.
Provenance: private collection, Namur, Belgium.
Measurements: 6.5 cm in length.
Small Roman terracotta oil lamp with an oval body, a front spout, and a central fuel hole. It retains the vertical rear handle and radial decoration around the disc, featuring relief motifs reminiscent of a stylized rosette or palmette.
Oil lamps were everyday objects in the Roman world, used for lighting with oil and a wick. In addition to their domestic function, they are also documented in funerary and ritual contexts, where light could take on a protective and symbolic meaning.
