DESCRIPTION
Head. Ancient Egypt, Hellenistic Period, 3rd century B.C.
Terracotta.
Measurements: 5.5 cm high.
Small terracotta head from Hellenistic Egypt, originating from the realm of folk art associated with the city of Fayum, as indicated by the old label on the base. The piece features a frontal face, almond-shaped eyes, a small mouth, and hair rendered through incisions, with lateral punctures that may have served for suspension or attachment.
During the Hellenistic Period, Egyptian coroplastics experienced a notable spread, combining local traditions with Greek influences. These small terracotta figures were used in domestic, votive, or funerary contexts and reflect the intense cultural syncretism of Ptolemaic Egypt.
