DESCRIPTION
Pair of Chinese candlesticks. Qing Dynasty, ca.1890.
Patinated bronze.
Exhibits wear consistent with age and use.
Measurements: 14 x 17 x 15 cm.
Pair of Chinese candlesticks of four lights. It stands out for its sculptural character. It has been made in patinated bronze and dates from the end of the Qing dynasty. Each piece features elaborate cast work, with richly modeled surfaces and areas of filigree fretwork that accentuate the sense of lightness and refinement despite the solidity of the material.
The central candlestick is surrounded by four Pixius, mythical creatures represented as winged guardian lions with dragon-like features. Their protective function (traditionally linked to the attraction of wealth, the expulsion of evil spirits and the safeguarding of the home) makes these objects not only utilitarian, but also symbolically charged.
