DESCRIPTION
Buddha head. Southeast Asia, 19th century.
Lacquered and gilded wood.
It presents losses in the polychrome and gilding, according to its age.
Measurements: 36 x 27 x 24 cm.
Serene head of Buddha made of lacquered and gilded wood, representative of the sculptural tradition of Southeast Asia, where spirituality is translated into refined forms and an expression of deep inner calm.
The face, with softly modeled features and narrowed eyes, conveys a sense of recollection and meditation, in accordance with Buddhist iconography. The arched eyebrows, the slight smile and the harmony of the features respond to an ideal of spiritualized rather than naturalistic beauty. The treatment of the hair, resolved by means of small stylized curls (ushnisha), reinforces its symbolic character.
The golden surface, applied over the lacquer, intensifies the sacred character of the image, since gold in the Buddhist context is associated with enlightenment and purity. These types of pieces, often intended for devotional or decorative settings, maintain a strong spiritual charge even when presented in fragmentary form.
