Artist especially interested in the marine, Jean van Dongen was the younger brother of the also painter Kees van Dongen. After studying architecture, he arrived in Paris in 1904 and settled with his brother Kees in Montmartre. He worked in France and especially in Marly-le-Roi, where he had his workshop and his kiln. He was a neighbor of Aristide Maillol, whom he met in 1922 and of whom he became a practitioner and friend. For the 1925 decorative arts exhibition, he made a creation for the couturier Paul Poiret.
