DESCRIPTION
ÉMILE GALLÉ (Nancy, France, 1846 - 1904).
Vase.
Cameo glass.
Signed.
Measurements: 34,5 x 11 cm.
Executed in cameo glass, this procedure, which consists of superimposing layers of glass of different shades and carving them to generate reliefs, allows a play of light and transparency that gives depth and dynamism to the surface. In this piece, the contrast between the amber background and overlays in brown tones produces a subtle chromatic vibration, evoking the light transition of dawn or dusk.
As for its author, Émile Gallé was a central figure in the renaissance of the decorative arts in France during the Belle Époque. Trained in an intellectual and scientific environment, his father was a ceramist and earthenware merchant, Gallé combined the rigor of the chemist with the imagination of the poet. His work in Nancy became the epicenter of the École de Nancy, a group of artists and craftsmen who advocated a union between art, nature and technique. Gallé drew inspiration from botany, literature and philosophy.
