DESCRIPTION

DAUM vase, ca .1930
Blue glass
Signed
Measurements: 20.5 cm (height); 23 cm (diameter)

Vase in blue glass of intense tonality, made by the Daum manufacture in the interwar period. The piece has an Art Deco-inspired structure, with hot-applied relief decoration that creates an interesting contrast between smooth and textured surfaces.

The vertical applications and the rough treatment of the glass provide a marked material effect, characteristic of the formal research developed by Daum in the 1920s and 1930s, when the firm explored architectural volumes and play of light through overlapping and glassy masses.

The vibrant blue color, deep and translucent, enhances the lighting effects and highlights the sculptural character of the piece. Signed, it is a representative example of the technical refinement and aesthetic modernity of Daum's production in the Art Deco period.

The Daum manufacture was founded in Nancy at the end of the 19th century by Augustin Daum, who was soon joined by his brother Antonin. Initially dedicated to utilitarian glass, in 1891 the firm turned its production towards artistic glass, influenced by the success of Émile Gallé, becoming one of the focal points of Art Nouveau in Nancy. After the closure caused by the First World War, the house resumed its activity adapting to the new aesthetics of Art Deco, exploring renewed techniques and decorative languages.
