Their elegant, classically inspired profile—enriched with an intense cobalt-blue background, delicate gilding, and chiseled bronze mounts—frames hand-painted cartouches depicting gallant and allegorical scenes featuring female figures and cherubs in idealized landscapes, evoking 18th-century French Rococo painting, particularly the tradition of artists such as François Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonard, whose work was frequently reinterpreted by porcelain painters during the 19th century.
Founded in 1740 and relocated to Sèvres in 1756 under the patronage of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour, the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres became one of the most influential institutions in European porcelain. During the 19th century, the manufactory maintained its leadership by adapting to historicist tastes and a renewed interest in styles of the past, producing pieces that combined the technical excellence of French porcelain with intricate ornamentation inspired by the Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo.
