Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich was a German painter of the 18th century, active mainly in Dresden, where he worked as painter of the court of Augustus III of Saxony; He stood out for his extraordinary technical versatility and for imitating with great skill the styles of masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Teniers or Salvator Rosa, cultivating very diverse genres - religious painting, landscapes, genre scenes, portraits and mythological themes - within the late Baroque and early Rococo, to the point that some of his works came to be confused for years with those of those great masters, which contributed both to his fame during his lifetime and to his later historical interest.
