JOSEP MARIA DE SUCRE (Barcelona, 1886 – Barcelona, 1969)
Untitled
Crayons on paper.
Signed.
Measurements: 21 x 14 cm; 32 x 26 cm with frame.
This work on paper depicts one of Josep Maria de Sucre’s most characteristic motifs: a frontal face with a solemn and enigmatic expression. The figure, rendered with direct brushstrokes and an intense color palette, appears against a vibrant yellow background, which accentuates the image’s visionary quality.
Josep Maria de Sucre was a painter, poet, and art critic. An active figure in Catalan culture, he frequented Barcelona’s intellectual circles and was associated with venues such as Els Quatre Gats and the Dalmau Galleries. His work, drawing on Expressionism and a certain primitivism, represents a transition between Modernism and the Catalan avant-garde.
He helped organize the Saló d’Octubre and served as president of the Cercle Maillol. His work is represented at MACBA and the Fundació Vila Casas, among other institutions.
