DESCRIPTION

EDWARD WORMLEY (United States, 1907 - 1995)
Pair of armchairs "5762", 1957.
Wood and leather.
Measurements: 82.5 x 61.5 x 62 cm (x2); 50 cm (seat).
The pair of "5762" armchairs, designed in 1957, represents an outstanding example of mid-century modern American furniture, where functional elegance and quality craftsmanship are combined with refined lines and noble materials. Its carefully crafted wood frame is complemented by leather upholstery that adds comfort and sophistication, reflecting the balanced approach between form and function that characterized the designer. The "5762" armchairs were edited by Dunbar and distributed in Europe by Mobilier Universel, under the direction of Jules Wabbes, allowing this design to cross the Atlantic and become a benchmark of international modern style.
Edward Wormley trained briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1926, although he had to abandon his studies for financial reasons. His career took off when he joined Dunbar Furniture in 1931, where he established himself as a leading designer and helped establish the company's modern identity, characterized by a balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern idiom. His designs combined contemporary aesthetics with practical functionality, making them attractive in both the United States and Europe.
