DESCRIPTION
BURKHARD VOGTHERR (Germany, 1942) for Hain & Tohme.
Sofa, 1980s.
Metal and imitation leather.
Measurements: 70 x 140 x 60 cm; 36 cm (seat height).
We can affirm that this sofa is totally distinctive of Burkhard Vogtherr due to its characteristic combination of organic forms and visible technical structure: the seat is a single continuous, soft and enveloping piece, with almost sculptural curved lines that prioritize ergonomics, while the legs, formed by thin vertical metal rods, introduce a light and architectural contrast; this balance between padded volume and minimalist base, together with the use of intense colors and a distinctly modern 60s-70s aesthetic, reflects his design approach, where functionality, structural clarity and an understated elegance are integrated into a visually clean but very recognizable object.
Burkhard Voghterr trained in industrial design in Kassel and Wuppertal. He founded his own design studio in Munich in 1972. He specialized in the design of furniture and office equipment. He has also worked for numerous design publishers such as Arco, Arflex, Artifort, Thonet, Haworth and Wilkhahn. Among his most famous creations are the "Graph" office chair for Wilkhahn, the "Senso" armchair for Arflex and the "Flamingo" chair for Artifort. Throughout his career he received numerous awards, including in Germany the Federal Prize "Gute Form", Furniture of the Year "Schöner Wohnen", "IF" the good industrial form, "German Selection" LGA Stuttgart, "Red Dot" Essen; in the USA the "Interior Design Magazine", the "Best of Neocon" and the "Roscoe"; in Denmark the "Danske Designpris" and in Japan the "International G-mark Prize".
