DESCRIPTION
BAROVIER & TOSO table clock. Murano, Italy, 1950s-60s.
Murano glass.
Excellent general condition.
Measurements: 30 cm diameter.
Table clock whose structure is formed by a ring of solid blown glass, made by filigree technique with white internal decoration arranged in a continuous helical pattern, which frames a circular sphere on glass support and gold metal base. The treatment of the glass, of great purity and uniformity, is in the Venetian tradition of the mid-twentieth century, noted for its optical dynamism and strong sculptural character.
Barovier & Toso was formed in 1936 with the merger of two glass factories: Vetreria Artistica Barovier and Ferro Toso. The company was first known as Ferro Toso Vetrerie Artistiche Riunite SA until 1942 and then as Barovier & Toso . Chief designer Ercole Barovier created many well-known designs, including Crepuscolo , Brillantati , Zebrati , Acanto and, of course, the popular ribbed design Cordonato d'Oro , usually made in red glass with gold leaf inclusions. The company still exists today.
