Gathered in an exceptional set of twelve copies, the "Miss Dorn" model is one of the most refined and recognizable designs of the collaboration between Philippe Starck and the Spanish publisher Disform. The piece explores a minimalist aesthetic based on pure geometric forms and a remarkable economy of means: a tripod structure in black lacquered tubular steel, a circular upholstered seat that seems to float above the base and a backrest resolved by means of a simple tubular arch.
"Miss Dorn" is an exercise in formal simplification, where the chair is reduced to its essential components without losing sculptural presence. The interaction between curved lines, inclined supports and a single circular plane generates a low, compact silhouette of great graphic precision, characteristic of Starck's language in the eighties.
The collaboration between Philippe Starck and Disform resulted in a series of furniture that have become icons of postmodern design. Characterized by their structural simplicity, the use of industrial materials and evocative names -several of them inspired by characters from Philip K. Dick's novel Ubik-, they fuse minimalism, irony and sculptural acuity. Highlights from this period include "Miss Wirt", "Miss Dorn" and "Wendy B".
Philippe Starck trained at the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris and soon began a wide international career, collaborating with firms such as Driade, Alessi, Kartell, Vitra and Disform. His projection was consolidated in the eighties, after being commissioned to renovate the private apartments of the Elysée Palace for François Mitterrand and to design the famous Café Costes. Since then, his output has encompassed furniture, lighting, interiors, architecture and industrial design, making him one of the key figures in contemporary design.
