DESCRIPTION

FRANÇOISE SEE (France, 1952) for Maison et Jardin.
Dining table, c. 1970.
Stainless steel.
It has faint bumps and slight rust stains.
Measurements: 300 x 130 x 73 cm.
Dining table designed by Françoise See for Maison et Jardin around 1970, an eloquent example of the turn that European furniture underwent in the transition between late modernism and the first inflections of contemporary design. In this piece, the structural rationality inherited from the Modern Movement is refined to reach an almost sculptural synthesis, where form, material and function converge with remarkable precision.
The table is articulated around an oval stainless steel top that emphasizes the visual continuity and the smoothness of the edges. This choice is not merely aesthetic: the surface reflects the light diffusely, avoiding aggressive glare and creating a discreet but sophisticated presence. The quality of the finish is evidence of a rigorous technical mastery, especially in the treatment of the edges, where the thinness of the horizontal plane does not compromise its structural stability.
The support system reveals the most innovative dimension of the design. The legs, resolved by means of open triangular frames, introduce a dynamic tension between stability and visual lightness. Unlike other more monumental contemporary pieces, here the emphasis is on visual openness: the supports do not interrupt the circulation of the gaze or the body, making it particularly suitable for interiors where fluid spatial continuity is sought. This feature brings it closer to certain explorations of Scandinavian design, although reinterpreted from a more analytical and constructive French sensibility.
