Made of solid wood with black lacquered finish and seat upholstered in mustard-colored velvet, the piece stands out for the balance of its proportions and the purity of its lines, elements that refer to the principles of Danish modernism of the 1960s and the works of designer George Jensen.
Georg Jensen developed a solid artistic training that began with his father and continued at Bizzie Høyer's drawing school and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a disciple of the sculptor Einar Utzon-Frank. He later furthered his studies in Paris under the tutelage of the Russian sculptor Ossip Zadkine. His early career as a sculptor was recognized with the Gold Medal of the Academy for his work David (1946), before joining the family firm, where he worked as a designer and later as artistic director between 1962 and 1974.
The formal language that characterizes his famous jewelry and silverware designs also found expression in his furniture creations. In them he translated functionalist principles and the search for beauty based on structural simplicity and technical excellence. His collaborations with Danish manufacturers, including Tønder, helped to consolidate a furniture production marked by understated elegance and timelessness.
The present rocking chair fully reflects these ideals, combining craftsmanship, innovation and sculptural sensibility. Its design embodies the essential values of the Scandinavian modern movement and is a representative testimony to Georg Jensen's contribution to 20th century Danish design.
