GIORGIO DE FERRARI (Italy, 1931 - 2022) for Elco.
Shelf, 1970s.
Modeled plastic.
In very good condition with discoloration on the white background and slight damage in the upper left area.
Measurements: 170 x 60 x 15 cm.
Wall shelf of the years of futuristic aesthetics made of molded plastic. The piece reflects the enthusiasm of the space age movement for the new synthetic materials and for the formal possibilities offered by industrial manufacturing processes. Its modular design and marked geometry respond to a conception of furniture as a flexible, functional element, fully integrated into new contemporary lifestyles. The work is set in the context of the extraordinary development of Italian design during the 1960s and 1970s, a period in which technological innovation and formal experimentation were the key factors in the development of Italian design.
Elco was a firm that played a leading role in the dissemination of innovative and accessible furniture. Particularly relevant in this context is the figure of Giorgio Ferrari, a designer trained at the Politecnico di Torino under the influence of Carlo Mollino and linked to some of the most outstanding personalities of Italian design in the second half of the 20th century, including Joe Colombo and Achille Castiglioni. His career developed in a creative environment marked by the search for new solutions for the modern habitat and by the integration of design, industry and experimentation.
