A pendant lamp designed by Kazuo Motozawa for the German firm Staff Leuchten in the 1970s, a period when designer lighting decisively incorporated the aesthetics of the Space Age. The piece features a shade composed of chrome-plated metal rings arranged in a vertical sequence, creating a visual effect that evokes Saturn’s rings. The design is completed by a circular top cap, a chrome-plated tubular shaft, and structural metal elements that reinforce its technical and sculptural character, characteristic of the industrial design of the era.
Kazuo Motozawa graduated in 1968 from the Musashino Junior College of Fine Arts and Music, where he began his training in industrial design. After graduation, he pursued a professional career in lighting design, collaborating with Yamagiwa, one of Japan’s leading companies in the sector. He later directed the LD Yamagiwa Laboratory from 1977 to 1985, a period during which he consolidated his experimental approach to light and form. In 1987, he founded HALO Design Laboratory, Inc., where he continued to develop contemporary lighting design projects. His work has been widely exhibited and recognized with various international design awards.
The lamp was produced by Staff Leuchten, a company founded in 1945 in Lemgo, Germany, by Alfred Staff and Otto Schwarz. Starting as a small workshop specializing in wooden and metal objects, the firm quickly evolved into one of Europe’s leading names in designer lighting, accumulating more than 200 international awards. During the 1960s and 1970s, it collaborated with major European manufacturers such as Stilnovo, Raak, and Lyfa, contributing to the spread of modern lighting design. In 1994, the company was acquired by the Zumtobel Group, consolidating its legacy within the contemporary lighting industry.
