DESCRIPTION
Decorative bowl. ESA. Denmark, ca. 1950s.
Teak.
Condition: good, with slight signs of wear consistent with its age.
Measurements: 10 x 21 x 20 cm.
Danish teak bowl with an organic profile and a light, airy appearance, produced by ESA in the mid-20th century. The piece stands out for the fluidity of its form, featuring a wavy rim, a gently hollowed-out cavity, and a low circular base, which allows the bowl to be viewed almost as a small wooden sculpture.
Its design evokes the refinement of Scandinavian furniture and household objects from the 1950s, when the quality of materials and formal simplicity took center stage. The teak, crafted with smooth, polished surfaces, imparts a characteristic warmth and reveals the natural richness of the grain.
This type of bowl is stylistically related to the world of Finn Juhl and to the works created by Magne Monsen for Kay Bojesen. The Metropolitan Museum houses a teak salad bowl designed by Finn Juhl and crafted by Magne Monsen for Kay Bojesen in 1949, which helps contextualize this Danish penchant for transforming a household object into a sculptural form of great purity.
