The “Bachelor” armchair is one of Verner Panton’s early designs, conceived in 1955 and produced by Fritz Hansen. Its lightweight chrome-plated metal rod frame supports a flexible suede surface, stretched over the frame with a simple and effective solution. The set, complete with a footrest, embodies a modern vision of a lounge chair: detachable, lightweight, casual, and visually very clean.

Unlike the more futuristic designs Panton would develop in the 1960s, the “Bachelor” retains a structural clarity reminiscent of Scandinavian rationalism, though it already reveals his interest in relaxed comfort and an unconventional silhouette. The angle of the backrest, the lightness of the steel, and the suspended nature of the seat create a piece with a understated yet highly recognizable presence.

Verner Panton was one of the key figures in 20th-century Danish design. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he initially worked alongside Arne Jacobsen before embarking on an independent career marked by experimentation with materials, color, and organic forms. The creator of iconic pieces such as the “Panton Chair,” his work is represented in institutions such as the Vitra Design Museum, MoMA in New York, and Designmuseum Danmark.
