Two-tiered side table, crafted from gilded metal with glass tops, a representative example of the historicist style that characterized decorative design from the late 19th century through the early decades of the 20th century. The openwork border framing both tabletops, together with the carefully crafted curvature of the legs, evokes the French neoclassical tradition, while the sculptural finials in the shape of eagle heads introduce a symbolic language associated with power—recurring motifs in imperial-inspired furniture. These references evoke in particular the Empire style developed during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, whose aesthetic revived models from classical antiquity and enriched them with military emblems and zoomorphic motifs of great expressive power.
However, the piece’s craftsmanship suggests a later reinterpretation of that repertoire, characteristic of the historicist revivals that became widespread in Europe and the Americas at the turn of the century. Overall, this piece reflects the enduring influence of the classical legacy in the decorative arts and the ability of historicist furniture to reinterpret styles of the past using industrial techniques and modern materials.
