DESCRIPTION
Firewall for chimney. France, 19th century.
Gilded and black blued bronze.
Measurements: 27 x 110 x 12 cm.
French firewall in transitional style between Neoclassicism and Empire style. Made mostly in black patinated bronze, it is combined with gilded bronze highlights. A fluted bar resting on the stepped pedestal ends in scrolls whose vertices open into scrolls. A chain hangs from end to end of the scroll and alternates gilt rings and bluing links. Sheaths of gilded and chiseled bronze with acanthus leaves mark the center from which the two fluted arms start, which describes a perfect symmetry. It is a sober model, which dispenses with the sculptural proliferation that would be characteristic of the Empire period. Its elegance is based on the precise study of the harmony of plant forms and ornaments.
