DESCRIPTION
ALEXEI PETROVITCH GRATCHEV (Russia, 1780-1850), late 19th century.
"Farewell kiss".
Patinated bronze.
Signed (illegible).
Measurements: 33 x 21 x 14 cm.
Sculpture representing a farewell scene. It shows a Cossack who, in a passionate outburst, has raised his girlfriend to give her a kiss before leaving for the war. They merge in a long and intense kiss. The horse, majestic and detailed, adds an extra dimension to the work, symbolizing strength and nobility. The bronze is worked with a high level of detail. The textures of the clothing, the equine anatomy and the facial expressions of the characters are realistic and emotive. The work reflects the traditions and customs of Imperial Russia, particularly the life of the Cossacks, who were known for their military role and nomadic lifestyle. The farewell symbolizes both the sacrifice associated with the life of the Cossacks and the emotional ties they left behind. Gratchev specialized in this type of subject matter: soldiers resting before battle or saying goodbye to their young wives.
