The equine anatomy has been extremely detailed in this equestrian sculpture, appreciable in the musculature, the mane and the nostrils. Gérôme faithfully captures the expression and the restrained vitality of the animal, in accordance with his realistic and meticulous style.
Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) was a French painter and sculptor, a preeminent figure of academicism and one of the main exponents of Orientalism in the 19th century. Distinguished by his impeccable technique, Gérôme tackled a diversity of subjects including depictions of classical antiquity, exotic scenes inspired by his travels in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as historical subjects. He enjoyed great recognition and influence in his time, teaching at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and actively participating in the official Salons.
