Pair of sculptures in round bulk, cast in patinated bronze, belonging to the Italian school of the nineteenth century. The works are inspired by the deer of the Villa dei Papiri, a pair of twin bronze sculptures representing fawns, discovered in Herculaneum. These works were part of the sculptural ensemble of the villa. The fawns were found in 1756 and are believed to have been originally located in the peristyle of the Villa dei Papiri, an open space decorated with statues.
The pieces represent two fawns, slender and graceful, captured in an attitude of alertness with their necks erect and heads raised, as if perceiving a distant sound in the bose. The quality of the modeling stands out in the naturalistic treatment of the anatomy, with a meticulous definition of the folds of the skin, the turned legs, and the careful representation of muscles and tendons, which confers dynamism and realism to the figures. The erect ears, bulging eyes and finely stylized muzzles reinforce the expressiveness of the animals, evoking the elegance and lightness characteristic of classical Pompeian iconography.
These sculptures reflect the neoclassical taste for the reinterpretation of the natural world through an idealized aesthetic, combining anatomical precision with a subtle stylization, with which they wanted to evoke the decorative statuary of the Pompeian era.
