Measurements: 23,5 x 11,5 x 4,5 cm each one.
Pair of carved, gilded and polychrome wood reliefs. It represents two holy apostles, in a style characteristic of the Spanish Baroque of the XVII century. Originally, these pieces would have been part of a main altarpiece or a side chapel, where they would have been placed next to other sacred scenes and figures with a didactic and devotional function. The faces, beards and hair are worked in great detail, seeking a naturalistic and at the same time solemn expression that inspires piety. Gestures and looks are restrained but full of inner life. The cloaks and tunics have wide and deep folds, with a movement that provides volume and a chiaroscuro effect, giving the figures theatricality. The use of the estofado technique can be appreciated, especially in the golden borders of the mantles, which imitates rich brocades on a gold leaf base.
One of them could represent St. Philip the Apostle, with a long, gray beard and a gaze directed downward in a reflective attitude. His main attribute is the long staff or cane topped with a cross that he holds with both hands.
The other could be James the Younger, younger in appearance and with a beard and dark hair. His right hand is raised in a gesture of teaching or blessing. Frequently, Saint Philip and James the Younger are represented together, since the Church celebrates their feast on the same day.
