DESCRIPTION

MICO RABUÑAL (A Coruña, 1979)
"Sugar Pussy." 2023
Mixed media on directly carved marble.
Signed on the base.
Measurements: 27 x 30 x 18 cm.

Carved directly into marble—a material historically associated with hardness, permanence, and monumental sculpture—“Sugar Pussy” paradoxically presents itself as a soft, organic, and sensual form, almost edible, accentuated by its pink, sugar-like finish. This contradiction—between the stony and the tactile, between the heavy and the seemingly fragile—is one of the central themes of Rabuñal’s work. The title reinforces this ambiguity: it combines the sweet and the sexual without being overly literal, suggesting an interpretation that explores desire, the body, and consumption.

The reference to the female body is not descriptive, but rather symbolic and sensory, connecting with a modern tradition that ranges from Brancusi to Louise Bourgeois, yet filtered through a pop and contemporary sensibility.

This sculpture, brimming with irony, clearly synthesizes Mico Rabuñal’s exploration of femininity and desire as cultural constructs and of sculpture as a space of friction between what we see, what we touch, and what we mentally project.

Trained at the Pablo Picasso School of Art and Design in A Coruña, Mico Rabuñal has developed a unique artistic language that combines sculptural tradition with a contemporary sensibility. He has exhibited in galleries in Madrid and at art fairs and emerging art spaces, and his work has been featured in group exhibitions focused on new Spanish sculpture. His work is included in private collections and has begun to be incorporated into national institutional and museum collections, such as the María Cristina Massaveu Petterson Foundation, consolidating an expanding career within the current art scene.
