This sculpture represents one of the Juni Shinsho, protective deities of Buddhism in charge of guarding the Medicine Buddha, Yakushi Nyorai, and safeguarding the sacred law against the forces of evil. The iconography responds to traditional models of Japanese Buddhist sculpture, characterized by the martial attitude, the fierce expression and an imposing presence of strong symbolic charge.

The figure is cast in bronze and richly decorated with champlevé enamel. This process, visible in the intricate polychrome motifs of the armor, adds decorative richness and is evidence of the high technical level reached by the Japanese workshops of the Meiji period.
