DESCRIPTION
FREDERIC MARÈS (Portbou, Girona, 1893 - Barcelona, 1991).
"Christ and the Tetramorphos".
Bronze and mahogany.
Signed.
Measurements: 98 x 83 cm.
Set of devotional character in which Frederic Marès masterfully articulates sculpture and artistic carpentry. The Christ in bronze, of elongated canon and serene expression, is arranged in a cross whose ends integrate circular medallions with the Tetramorphos: the angel, the lion, the ox and the eagle, symbols of the Evangelists.
Angelic figures and biblical groups, resolved in relief, present a rhythmic and elegant treatment. The carved wooden structure, of medieval inspiration, underlines Marès' desire to dialogue with the Romanesque and Gothic tradition from a fully contemporary sensibility.
Frederic Marès was one of the great Spanish sculptors of the 20th century, trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and author of an extensive production that includes religious imagery, portraiture and monumental sculpture. Founder of the Frederic Marès Museum in Barcelona, member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and distinguished with numerous awards, his work is characterized by technical solidity and balance between historical tradition and modern language, qualities fully visible in this set.
