DESCRIPTION
German school, second half of the 19th century.
"Three monks in the refectory".
Miniature in carved wood and bone.
Measurements: 18 x 30,5 x 19,5 cm.
This costumbrista scene is developed on a base that simulates a pavement of flagstones, carefully worked, and it is enriched with secondary elements like utensils, recipients and small animals to their feet, that contribute an anecdotal and narrative tone.
The combination of carved wood and bone -with the heads and hands resolved in light material that contrasts with the dark habits- responds to a Central European tradition that was widespread at the time. This type of work, halfway between sculpture and decorative object, enjoyed great success in the bourgeois sphere for its detail, technical virtuosity and friendly character.
These miniatures, conceived as cabinet pieces, combine technical skill and theatrical sense, offering a genre scene full of subtle humor, characteristic of Germanic decorative art of the nineteenth century.
