The work of José Manuel Martínez Pérez is situated in a territory where the figurative tradition dialogues with a deeply expressive contemporary sensibility. His language is based on a solid knowledge of drawing and classical anatomy, but moves away from academic naturalism through a dynamic and psychological interpretation of the human body. The figures are subjected to internal tensions that are manifested in twists, fragmentations or displacements, generating a sense of instability that gives the works a strong emotional charge.
José Manuel Martínez Pérez was born in Lepe (Huelva) in 1972, sculptor and graduate in Fine Arts in Seville. He has made numerous public commissions in his homeland among which are: the monument to Alonso Barba (2019), the monument to the Sailor (2012), the monument to Reading (2009), the monument to the elderly and the Beautiful (2007), monument to Football (2006) or the monument to the Farmer (2002), and a bust tribute to José Folgado Blanco (2021) in Tres Cantos (Madrid). His work can be seen at the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Sicily (MACS) in Catania. He has won the 56th Reina Sofia prize for painting and sculpture (2021) and has received the sculpture medal "Miquel Blay y Fábregas" from the AEPE (Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors). He has also been honorable mention in Figurative 2019 and 2021. He has had numerous group and solo exhibitions in Spain, USA and Italy. He is currently a professor of anatomy and drawing from life at the Escuela Superior de Dibujo Profesional (ESDIP) in Madrid. In 2020 he was named "Favorite Son" by the City Council of Lepe, his hometown. In 2024 he was awarded with the national prize Cultura Viva of plastic arts.
