DESCRIPTION
Christ crucified. Europe, XVI century
Bronze.
In good condition. It presents patina according to its age. Slight losses in the wooden base (added later).
Measurements: 43 x 22 cm (cross); 12,5 x 12,5 cm (Christ); 56,5 cm (with pedestal).
Devotional bronze piece with Christ on a cross with three-lobed arms, a frequent typology in the European production of the 16th century, especially in areas related to domestic or conventual religiosity.
The figure of Christ, of stylized canon and elongated anatomy, responds to late Gothic models in transition towards a greater naturalism. The treatment of the body, with a soft accentuation of the musculature and a dynamic cloth of purity, shows a restrained expressive will, centered on the serenity of the sacrifice rather than on the exacerbated dramatism of later periods.
Pieces like this one belong to the tradition of objects of private devotion, conceived for contemplation and prayer, where formal sobriety is combined with an intense spiritual presence.
