Delicate representation of the Pietà, iconography of great rootedness in the Spanish sculpture of the Baroque, where the Virgin holds the dead body of Christ after the Descent from the Cross. The composition, of contained format, is conceived for private devotion, emphasizing the emotional closeness with the faithful.
The carving stands out for the expressive intensity of the faces, especially in the Virgin, whose restrained gesture transmits serene pain and recollection. The body of Christ, treated with naturalism, shows the traces of the Passion through a sober polychrome that accentuates its dramatic character.
The wide and enveloping folds, together with the chromatic richness -greens, reds and golds-, respond to the Hispanic baroque models, where the polychrome plays an essential role in the vivacity of the image. The silver crown reinforces its devotional character and symbolic hierarchy.
It is a representative work of Spanish baroque carving, where the union between naturalism, emotional intensity and polychrome richness reaches one of its most characteristic expressions.
