DESCRIPTION

Measurements: 57 cm (height).

Polychrome wood carving representing the Virgin Mary standing with the Child, within the tradition of the Late Gothic or flamboyant. The figure adopts a soft curvature that contributes dynamism to the composition, while the faces, of serene expression, evidence a progressive humanization, typical of a moment in which the naturalism begins to impose itself without abandoning the mysticism characteristic of the period.

The treatment of the cloths, with angular and deep folds, together with the chromatic richness -greens, reds and golds-, refer to the Hispano-Flemish style, fruit of the strong influence of the Flemish models in the Iberian Peninsula. This combination of decorative linearity and the search for volume places the work in a moment of transition between medieval rigidity and a greater naturalistic sensibility.

Likewise, the conception of the Child, of more plausible proportions and less hieratic attitude, reinforces this stylistic evolution. Mary appears crowned, reaffirming her condition of Queen of Heaven, and holds a rosary, underlining her devotional character in an image conceived for private or parish worship.
