DESCRIPTION
Pair of decorative weights. India, 18th century.
White Makrana marble inlaid with hard stones (Parchin Kari technique).
Measurements: 13 x 10,5 x 10,5 cm (each).
Delicate pair of weights made in white Makrana marble, a material of great prestige used in Mughal architecture, and decorated using the refined technique of Parchin Kari or Indian hard stone. The inlays of semi-precious stones form stylized floral motifs in a clear courtly tradition, evoking the ornamental language developed during the Mughal Empire. The precision of the workmanship and the fineness of the contours denote a high quality workmanship.
Originally conceived to hold carpets on terraces or to keep doors open, these objects stand out today for their decorative value and formal elegance. The harmony between the globular finials and the ornamentation makes this pair a representative example of Indo-Islamic taste, ideal both for decorative use and to enrich a collection of oriental arts.
