"Head of a woman Mangbetu", ca. 1940
Plaster.

Measurements: 48 x 18 x 22 cm.
The present head of a young Mangbetu woman stands out for the elegance of her elongated silhouette and the serenity of her features, a faithful reflection of the aesthetic canons of this Central African culture. The work transcends mere ethnographic representation to offer a refined synthesis, where direct observation is combined with a modern sculptural sensibility, endowing the piece with a timeless and refined presence.
Marguerite Anne de Blonay, a Swiss sculptor trained in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, developed a career deeply marked by her travels and her stay in Africa, where she founded an art school in Casablanca in 1934.
